Selsdon Mowbray/Burglar (60s to 80s): An elderly, hard-of-hearing actor with a fondness for alcohol.
*** The actor does not need to be the exact age of the character they will portray. Teenagers and adults can audition for a role. Acting experience is not required but will be a large advantage with these zany characters.
*** If you do not know the show, you are not required to watch it, but it may help you to understand the type of show we will be performing and help you decide on the side you will choose.
*** If you do know the show and would like to audition for a specific role, be prepared to discuss your choice at auditions.
Noises Off
Directed by Darve Smith
Open auditions will be held on Sunday, May 11th (2pm - 3pm) & Monday, May 12th (6pm - 7pm) at the CAST Theatre located at 920 Nichols Avenue in Bay City, Texas. You only need to attend one of the auditions. If you can not attend either audition date, you may submit a video audition instead.
Imagine the most chaotic, hilarious backstage farce you can possibly conceive, and then multiply it by ten. That's "Noises Off." It's a play within a play, and it's a masterclass in physical comedy, precise timing, and sheer, delightful pandemonium.
The show follows a touring theatre company performing a dreadful farce called "Nothing On." We see "Nothing On" during three different performances: the disastrous dress rehearsal (Act 1), a mid-tour matinee viewed from backstage (Act 2), and a late, completely disintegrated performance towards the end of the run (Act 3).
The brilliance of "Noises Off" lies in revealing the offstage relationships, rivalries, and escalating disasters that occur behind the scenes. Actors forget lines, sabotage each other, and generally descend into absolute chaos.
Expect doors slamming, sardines flying, actors tumbling down stairs, and intricate choreography involving multiple entrances and exits. This play demands a high level of physical skill and comedic timing.
The play is incredibly fast-paced. You'll need to be able to deliver lines quickly, react instantaneously, and execute physical comedy with precision.
Sardines are a recurring motif and a source of much comedic chaos.
The play ingeniously flips between the "Nothing On" performance and the backstage drama. This requires actors to switch gears quickly and portray distinct personalities.
Audition Tips:
Focus on Physicality: Show your ability to move with agility and comedic timing.
Demonstrate Comedic Range: Highlight your ability to play both broad, farcical characters and more nuanced, realistic moments.
Show Versatility: Be prepared to switch between different emotional states quickly.
Embrace the Chaos: Don't be afraid to be silly and over-the-top.
Auditioners will...
...check the rehearsal and performance dates and determine if they can make ALL the performance dates, ALL the rehearsals in the 2 weeks prior to the performance dates & most of the preceding rehearsal dates. There is a LOT of rapid-fire entrances, exits and physical comedy. If you are going to miss a week of rehearsals you may never catch-up. The actors MUST learn all the fast-paced cues and axe-swings together, not with a stand-in.
